Baby Bruno

Bruno

 Meet Bruno....

He is a Caucasian Shepherd and is just 10 months old. He was saved by Last Hope Rescue when no one else would touch him due to his issues as he already had a bite history and the neighbours cheered when Phil Lyons-John picked him up and removed him from his "home". He was placed in specialised working/security dog kennels due to his behaviour but a few weeks later after biting all the male staff, Last Hope were asked to remove him so we did a swap with one of thier other dogs that was here on rehab and speedily arranged transport to get him in and safe. This lad is so fearful of men and guards his kennel, his food and resources and it took a few weeks to be able to kennel share with him safely. On placing his first meat meal into his kennel Joy was greeted by a snarling, air-born dog.....so her very first job was to work on the resource guarding! We do this the Irish way and overload the resources so that they loose their value. We line up bones, chews, toys and bowls of kibble etc in the kennel so that the novelty becomes diminished; as he also came in underweight so there was no harm done with food overloading. She spent lots of time with him initially just talking to him from outside and then slowly inching her way into his kennel as he relaxed and let his guard down and a few weeks ago she was allowed right into his kennel to change his bedding, fluff his pillows and get him cosy. He has made good progress overall and has learned that toys have a purpose other than to be guarded. He will however attack any new people and is incredibly fearful of bangs, sudden noises and the unknown but we worked diligently and very slowly inched forward with trust and he began to enjoy a bit of fuss and careful cuddles with permission. A few weeks on Joy can now totally kennel share with him and he has stopped mouthing on her arm and trying to jump all over her. He has a sensitive tummy and gets colitis so he has a special diet of meat and mackerel in oil. He has put on some weight and is 5.7 tall at only 10 months so he is a big lad. A month ago she got him out for his first walk which he loved and has now become part of his daily routine. He is getting braver by the day but has only bonded with Joy and shows aggression to all others and for his safety he will remain a one handler boy.

The heartbreaking thing is of course that at just 10 months old he is already so messed up but our baby Caucasian will be just fine. This is what the sanctuary is about, taking on the issued, the damaged, the unloved, the unwanted and expelled and treating them with respect and love to give them a new beginning and a safe, happy, fulfilled life.

P.S Baby Bruno costs £40 a week to feed because of his special diet and enormous appetite so if you have a few pennies to spare either monthly or a one off donation we would be very grateful

We now have six Caucasian Shepherds onsite and a plethora of other shepherds of all shapes and sizes and we have recently launched a new arm to the Sanctuary to help these guys whose plight is becoming more and more of an issue. Caucasians UK SOS will be here for them, for advice, for information and for emergencies to try our best to bring them into sanctuary when needed and to become a point of contact for rescues, professionals and public alike for consultation and advice 24/ 7 for and we will have nationwide contacts who can step in at a moments notice with the knowledge and means necessary to keep these beautiful dogs safe.

We can be contacted through the website here and  have set up a dedicated group on Facebook.
