In Other News: A Bunny Is For Life.....

Cute fluffy Bunnies are highlighted by the media to sell thier Easter merchandise at this time of year but thier sad plight is little known or even thought of.....I'm sure it would come as a shock to many to know that around 67,000 rabbits are abandoned each year in the UK..they are the lucky ones, they end up in rescue or sanctuary. Countless others are abandoned into the wild where they are not equipt to survive and will die horrible deaths from disease, starvation or be killed by predators.

Given those statistics, it comes as no surprise that rabbits are one of the most neglected domestic animals in the UK. Mostly out of ignorance these little creatures are kept in conditions that are torturous. Rabbits are engineered to explore, run and jump and they are very social (think Watership Down) they love company....being on thier own in a hutch without a run is like being in prison; like us they suffer from boredom and depression.

Easter is of course the worst time for the domestic rabbit...breeders rub thier hands together and pet shops stock up and cash in on a parents need to buy a cute fluff-ball for thier children; most of whom will grow bored with it after a few short weeks. The novelty wears off and it's left to go insane in its too small cage or simply dumped into an environment that is a death sentence.

A rabbit can make a lovely pet but they have a lifespan in excess of 10 years, they require care and attention, they are a commitment just like a dog or a cat. If you are not prepared to make that commitment to thier welfare then you really shouldn't even think about owning one.
