Sensational Sid joined us over a year ago as a permanent sanctuary boy due to him being intensely human reactive with a long bite history. On arrival he was a bouncing bag of nerves and intense fear and was highly reactive, especially with men. However Joy saw something in him and worked diligently with him to gain his trust. The rehab process started slowly and it took about a month of repetitive routines and interaction but once thier bond was established and she was able to safely share his space without risk; the task began to get him to be less fearful of others. Joy employed all of her experience and tricks to teach him the skills he needed to trust others and learn how to be accepting in a new way and he spent much of the summer of 2017 out playing, having fun and working with our volunteer Sandra Umfreville who had a real soft spot for him.
Over the winter, Sid continued to improve and has been happy and able to cope with all of the sanctuary volunteers doing his kennel and care. Sadly Sandra had to step back from her sanctuary role last autumn but she never forgot her Sid and when Joy was sure he was ready she knew just who to contact and Sid now has his permanent forever home with Sandra and her pack.
"I've always loved Sid, he is part sleeping sloth and part bouncing tigger. He is very sweet with my crazy pack who are all taking to him extremely well. I like to tell everyone I am his true love but truth be known he is a complete tart and loves everyone. A typical lurcher who likes to run around a bit and then sleep on a comfy bed for 20 hours a day, a bit like me really. He is having lots of walks and fun and is enjoying all the new sights and smells. He is a treasured addition to the family and has already brought us all a lot of happiness and laughs. Xxx"
So Sid is proof that there is always hope, hope that some of the dogs that come to us with seemingly insurmountable problems can learn new ways to be, to cope, to be happy and to ultimately to leave the Sanctuary to go into a very carefully selected home. These second chances may be few and far between but they do happen and Sid is now a stable, non-reactive lad who is able to handle domestic life with Sandra and his pack by his side.
Happy New Beginning Sid x
