King Khan..

Khan...the new king on the block arrived on the 20th of October and makes the Sanctuary his home..

Khan is a Caucasian Mountain Shepherd Dog and he is HUGE! He weighs in at about 80kg so that makes him bigger and heavier than a lot of people, including Joy! He has come to us from Niall Lester at New hope Rescue. Niall found a home for him in March but unfortunately it did not work out and he was back at New Hope in April and he said "For those that remember Kahn, the Caucasian we recently took in and rehomed, He is back with us. Although the home was in many ways perfect there was one member of the family Kahn does not take to so after some lengthy discussions between us and his new owners, and understanding the breed and thier capabilities it was decided he return to New Hope.
I'm gutted it didn't work out as it could have been ideal but that's rescue for you and that's life time back up. Our dogs will always have a place back with us. He can be choosy who he likes but thankfully he was pleased to see me when I went to pick him up. Kahn is not the sort of dog you advertise for a home or can really push for, the right and experienced place will find him."

Niall tried without success to find the right home and reached the decision that what Khan needed was Sanctuary so he contacted us a while ago and we agreed to give this special boy a place and he travelled down with him last week and it was clearly hard for Niall to let him go.

"He came in a challenging lad and has come so far. We've bonded so much. But I always knew he could do better than me. He is not rehomable but a decent sanctuary space has come up where he will have more than we can provide for him. And that's what it's all about, caring for them until you find them the next step in their journey.
Khan will be sorely missed. A massive thank you to Joy Keys of Birkett-Smith and to Phil Lyons-John for driving me and Khan from Kent to Dorset today."

And here he is....King Khan.

He can be reactive and unpredictable and needs careful handling but he has settled well. He likes to have his one person and bond with them and luckily he fell for Joy pretty quickly. His appetite has picked up which is great as he is a little underweight as Joy found out when she groomed him which is a time she uses to bond with him, he really enjoys a brush and she gained another dog in hair from thier twice daily sessions. At first she brushed him and talked to him through the bars of his run but she can now get in with him. Through grooming him, she also discovered that he had an ear infection but he is feeling much better after a course of antibiotics. He has moved into a bigger 12 foot double space now he is acclimatised to the sanctuary and is more settled and she describes him as a total gent. He is out for daily walks and he loves a mooch about in the smaller area off lead. He'll soon be having a run in the paddocks.

Khan had spent much if his time on a chain before Niall rescued him and now he is finally home and already loving Sanctuary life.

Khan's space here at the sanctuary was funded but his care falls to us so we are looking for sponsors for him and Wishlist donations! Although Khan is a big boy he is not a foodie but by trial and error we have found his favourites and he adores webbox, markies biscuits and pure duck treats and he's munching his way through four large rolls of Webbox a day.........that's 120 rolls a month at a cost of £83! All of his treats and food are on the Amazon Wishlist and all donations are very gratefully received!
