Some dogs, it has to be said prefer a kennel to a home but for most dogs, suddenly being in a kennel environment can be a frightening experience; even when every effort has been made to make it warm and comfortable and safe we all know it's still a world away from a home. Dogs are confined, separated and put in close proximity to other dogs and as you can imagine the noise from the cacophony of barking neighbours is stupendous and in some cases relentless and enough to drive an already stressed dog crazy. Environmental changes of this magnitude can be difficult for any dog but for previously abused and therefore particularly vulnerable and sensitive dogs it is a living nightmare and one not easily combated by a rescue. Kennel stress does not make it easy to assess a dog and not all dogs are safe enough to be put into even an experienced foster home to be assessed. Behaviours brought on by the kennel environment are a stumbling block that can spell a sad but inevitable end for a dog that just needed some time out.
We get asked to step in in a lot of these cases and indeed our SOS Havens provide a fairly unique rehab and assessment opportunity to rescues in these circumstances; having to say no when we are full is heartbreaking when we know we could help but for the sake and safety of the animals already in our care; room and finances do have to play a part. Luckily we have a good network of fundraisers now and of course fabulous supporters and we work in close partnership with a few rescues and we can move and adjust to fit when someone really, really needs us and this girl really, really does.
This poor bag of bones is on her way to us as we type...prior to her rescue she was subjected to horrific abuse (which is why we can't show all of her or name her yet) and she is severely stressed in kennels and has dropped a massive amount of weight despite her rescues best efforts. Any calories they did manage to get into her have been burnt off almost immediately through anxiety and she needs a complete change of scene to give her the chance to reset and get healthy before we can work on any underlying behaviours.
So how does it work? She goes from a rescue kennel environment to a Sanctuary kennel environment...how is that different? Well it's actually a world apart, here she can be put into one of our quiet houses, overlooking the fields away from the other dogs so she can be at peace to regain her equilibrium. She will be tucked into the heart of the sanctuary and can just 'be' for a while which in some cases is all these dogs need. With minimal handling we can give her what she craves, calm her down and hopefully get her weight back up. In short we can save her from destruction and we can do this because of your generosity and support and we just wanted to say THANK YOU, thank you for always being there and for helping us to save another life..... x
With the help of you, our supporters we will always be here for the dogs that have no other options, where their issues do not allow them to be in a domestic environment. Please keep giving these beautiful animals your support Donate
