The Birkett~Smith Animal Sanctuary was founded a couple of years ago on a smallholding in Dorset and formalised as a registered Charity not long after. We provide forever homes for domestic, farm and wildlife animals. Most have behavioural issues, are aggressive, old, disabled, human scared etc...so we basically take the animals that stand little or no chance of gaining homes let alone the security of a forever home. Our 150 animals include dogs, cats, pigs, sheep, horses, all farm birds, emus and even a seagull! We are one of the the very few UK sanctuaries that will take aggressive and fear aggressive dogs as we have a no kill policy full stop. We rehabilitate these animals as much as we can over time to enable them to enjoy their forever homes. We also have 'SOS HAVEN Rehabilitation' spaces for UK rescues seeking a place of safety and rehab for behaviourally affected dogs. In most cases this unique service offers them their last chance to gain help for animals which would otherwise be put to sleep. The sheer number of requests we have received for SOS spaces in such a short time is sad testament to the over-breeding/throwaway attitude and abuse towards animals that has become more prevalent in the UK and the need for these spaces is more apparent than ever. We currently have many dogs waiting for a space but only have 12 SOS Haven's which are all full. So we are building again and making improvements to our existing facilities. At the moment the dogs live in hamlet style housing spread out over an acre. Our aim this year is to get all the dogs under cover in one state of the art sound and weatherproofed facility and provide another eight SOS Havens; havens which will help dogs like Benson...
The gorgeous Benson, a lovely lad who was really struggling with life and found it hard to cope with every day things came to us for some time to chillax, be loved and have some rehab in the hopes that we could help him overcome his fears. And it worked, he's now in foster! This boy has gone from a little rommie; scared of the world and hiding in his haven to now living in a home and getting out and about into the big wide world of wonder. Brave lad, Benson! We are so proud of him.
Our aim is to always get them back out again on their journey having been fully assessed and worked on, seeing a dog relax into the safety of the sanctuary is our motivation and seeing the dogs thrive and become the loving creatures they were before society dealt them a rough hand is what drives us and seeing them safely into a forever home is what our dreams are made of.

“Not many folks know they have such a fantastic animal charity in the Bridport area. These dedicated, hard working, experienced people give their all into helping the most abused animals get their last chance to learn to trust a human and or others of their kind again. In their short lives the most dreadful torture & starvation, mental cruelty & imprisonment has been done to them. Joy and her crew take time to give love and lots of training to these poor injured souls. Please look at the website to find out more, give the price of a coffee or make a donation.” Donate
