THE BIRKETT-SMITH ANIMAL SANCTUARY
We are The Birkett~Smith Animal Sanctuary and we are a rarity in the UK as we are one of the largest sanctuaries to take in both human and dog aggressive dogs and rehabilitate them.
We are one of the the very few UK sanctuaries that will take aggressive and fear aggressive dogs and we rehabilitate these animals as much as we can over time to enable them to enjoy their forever home here with us or to go back out into the world with new skills.
We provide forever homes for just under 100 dogs, a few cats and some farm animals including sheep, horses, geese and chickens.
BSAS Rehabilitation
As well as giving sanctuary and rehab to our own animals, until recently we offered short to medium term rehabilitation spaces for UK rescues and privately owned dogs who were seeking a place of safety and rehab for behaviourally affected dogs who suffered with various issues whether those were human, environment or animal directed.
In most cases this unique service offered them their last chance to gain help for animals which would otherwise have been put to sleep and was hugely successful and worked very well in the most part with only a few dogs being unable to go back to a home environment, mainly due to special homes being very hard to find.
We are immensely proud and honoured to have helped so many dogs over the years through the rehabilitation stays at the sanctuary and to have worked with so many wonderful people and rescues. Unfortunately, due to onsite constraints, The Birkett-Smith Animal Sanctuary no longer offers this particular service. However, Joy Keys does.
Her company is The Canine Behaviour Rehabilitation Centre(CBRC) and is a stand-alone trading entity that no longer falls under the umbrella of the Birkett Smith Animal Sanctuary and will continue to provide rehabilitation for rescues and owners but completely independently from the sanctuary and the charity, from independently owned, licenced boarding kennels. Basically, it is the same service, just a different venue and no longer part of BSAS.

Dog Coat Amnesty
It’s that time of year again and we are running our annual ‘Dog Coat Amnesty’
It gets very cold up on our hill in Dorset and we have lots and lots of dogs of all shapes and sizes to keep warm in winter. We also have a lot of shredders so a continual back-up store is needed!
The gift of a used coat may not seem much but it is always very much needed and appreciated by us…..any shape, size or colour...new or used...spaniel to shepherd sizes are particularly needed but anything and everything will be very gratefully received and can be sent to:
